How to Increase Engagement on Instagram

📍Siam Square, Bangkok

First of all, I'm not an Instagram expert. Second, I'm not a big influencer with 100k of followers. However, I've tried many things on the platform, from joining the 'engagement group' to commenting back and forth. I've eventually come to the conclusion which works the best for my Instagram@thequinoxfashion, and which doesn't. FYI, it might be different from yours, but I just want to share the techniques, in terms of my experiment here.

JOINING THE ENGAGEMENT GROUP/ INSTA POD DOESN'T WORK FOR ME

If you constantly on Telegram, whatsapp or DM, you probably like the way people share & engage one another contents. When I was in a few groups, the engagement was increasing (obviously) Because literally there were people backing up your post. However, there were a few reasons why I left. 1) Staying online, trying to catch up with everyone's new post is way too impossible. I have other things to do in life, including working as a social media editor & marketing. My energy's drained, and I couldn't be bothered to check over 30 new messages everyday (sorry) 2) There's no genuine in the comments. It's good to support each other, but I just didn't like to be told what to comment. For example, 'can you mention/tag the brand in the comment?', 'can you comment on the lipstick?' etc. 3) I hate drama. When someone missed the comments earlier, or couldn't keep up with the latest photo, oh here we go...'girl you forgot commenting my photo' Once I decided to leave one, the rest followed.

REAL ENGAGEMENT IS BETTER FOR ME

When I mean real, it's the way I reach out other Instagrammers, and comment by myself. I keep up with everyone's latest photo when I have a free time. It makes me feel more comfortable. Commenting from the heart is important, not just rushing or being rushed. After I had left all of the engagement groups, I could literally notice that the amount of likes and comments decreased (of course!) However, everything's back to normal now, in spite of the personal engagement. So, I can say that to join the group or not makes no difference in terms of the engagement. You can also do it by yourself. I mean, for me I love supporting others, but in the way of 'forcing' you know. If you still want to join, then a small size like 10 people can be a great deal. Honestly, some of the groups I was in were amazing Insta-friendly. I mean, we limited the post to just '1' per day, and everyone was so nice to each other.

CONTENT IS THE KEY

Yes, we all have a lot of complaints towards the new Instagram algorithm right? However, my job as a social media editor is to analyze the key of growth. Having been comparing and reporting the social media of the brand for years, I still insist that 'content plays a big impact of reach and engagement on Instagram' Ok so why my account is still not growing or have over 50K?? 1.) I don't buy fake or spam followers and engagement. 2.) I don't have a time to seriously dedicate to the platform (yet) 3.) I don't have a personal photographer to take the 'right' photo at the moment. What do you mean by the right photo? The right photo doesn't only attract the engagement, but also expand the reach span of your account. In other words, whichever picture or content that your followers like, keep holding on to that. Don't just keep switching to this/that, because once the content is not interesting enough, the reach span will stop. As a result, you might lack the engagement because less people will be able to see your content. That's the reason why whomever you engage, you tend to see his/her feed more often. For example, one photo can have the reach span more than 8 hours, while  whatever that isn't interesting, the span can stop by 2 hours.

  1. Great tips babe! At the end of the day I think that its all about being genuine and connecting in an organic way with your following. However you do need to put in the effort to reach out and interact with them to create a community and long lasting relationship!

  4. Thank you for sharing your tips! I agree that commenting from heart is very important as well as putting effort in creating honest community that isn't there just for the likes and fame. Numbers are important, but not more than true and long lasting audience.
